The ordered cosmos is separated into two diametrically opposing realms: the heavenly Feorrealm and the infernal Netherrealm. The Netherrealm is the birthplace of demons, devils, and evil spirits. The Netherrealm is known to be a vile place in all cultures and religions.
The Tyrian Legacy and the Davidian Order both regard the Netherrealm as an Elder prison for the souls of the damned and the evil legions that were condemned in the Elder Era. The Fey do not have a clear concept of the Netherrealm, instead regarding it as an abstract epicenter of death and suffering deep within the earth, far from their own enchanted borders. Pagan religions such as the Ashati and the Children of Krom and Dirgach regard the Netherrealm as a sentient vortex that attempts to draw all creation into its ravenous maw.
The Arcane Order has devoted much study to the nature of the Netherrealm, its form and properties more than its purpose and origin, and has concluded that it is a naturally occurring phenomenon formed at one polar extreme of the Axis Mundi. The collection of matter and energy from the realm of Limbo has formed a material realm infused with negative energy. The structure and character of the Netherrealm varies by proximity to the terminus of the Axis Mundi; as one moves farther and farther from the terminus, the realm becomes exponentially more vast and tumultuous.
